SUNY Cobleskill Students Using EDF Scholarships to Pursue Careers in Agriculture

White’s Farm Supply has five locations in New York and works to serve a broad agricultural sector. Owner Jeff White says it is important for the dealership to support young people who want to pursue careers in ag, which is why the dealership is matching scholarships this year from the Equipment Dealers Foundation for two students pursuing careers in ag and the equipment industry.

Sarah Peavey and Ross Runfola both have ties to the dealership and each are receiving $1,000 from EDF and $1,000 from White’s Farm Supply. Both students are studying at State University of New York – Cobleskill. Peavey is studying ag business, focusing her love of working with people and advocating for agriculture in a potential sales or marketing role. Runfola is completing the SUNY Cobleskill Ag Tech program for a future career in the equipment industry, putting his interest in engineering to work.

Both of Peavey’s parents work at the dealership. White says her leadership in FFA during high school and her work on the ag marketing team and in student government during college helped earn her the EDF scholarship. In fact, this is the second time Peavey has been awarded a scholarship through EDF.

“Sarah has shown that she has a real desire and willingness to pursue an agricultural career,” says White. “That’s why she really stood out as a potential candidate.”

“It is great to have connections in the equipment industry, especially with EDA,” says Peavey. “I’m really excited to have this opportunity, and I’m so grateful for it.”

Runfola has worked at White’s Farm supply through a program that allows youth to work part-time at the dealership while earning credits for a diploma. As a technician’s apprentice, he has gained hands-on experience that he will apply in the classroom.

“Ross is gleaning a lot of experience before he goes off to college,” says White. “His diligence and work ethic over the course of the last year have really impressed us at White’s Farm Supply.”

“I come from a long line of farmers, and it is rewarding to repair and help farmers with their machinery,” says Runfola. “Being awarded this scholarship means less of a financial burden to further my education, which is a blessing.”

EDF was established in 1988 to provide scholarship funding to help meet the industry’s needs for trained individuals. EDF also provides temporary assistance for dealerships and its employees affected by natural disasters. Learn more about EDF here.
